Allen Claxton was found late Friday, July 20 hanging in the attic of his home by Stamford Police, said Capt. Richard Conklin.

"We've been worried that something like this might happen,"  Conklin said. "We had been talking with him quite a bit."

According to Conklin, police responded to the couple's Hycliff Terrace home on June 11 and found his wife, Eden Claxton, covered in blood and not breathing. Allen Claxton had rope burns on his neck.

He told detectives that someone had broken into their home and hidden and then tried to hang him and when he woke up he found his wife dead beside their bed, Conklin said.

Police never bought the story and shortly after arrested Claxton for the murder of his wife.

Along the way, people speculated about a murder-suicide pact gone wrong. But the arrest affidavit shows that Claxton was worried about the couple's finances, even though on paper, they seemed fine financially.

Conklin said police believe he killed his wife and then tried to make it look like he was hanged. Following his wife's death, Claxton continued to grow more depressed.

"There was a family friend who was checking on him a few times a week and when she didn't hear from him from Wednesday to Friday she called our department," Conklin said.

He said patrol units and detectives met the friend at the home and searched the home and found Claxton hanging in the attic.

Claxton had pleaded not guilty to his wife's murder on Thursday, July 20, one day before taking his life.
